Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Binks 66SS, 67SS and 68SS fluid nozzles?

Orifice size, which sets how heavy a material the gun can move:

Fluid nozzleOrificeUse forNeedle
66SS (45-6601).070″ / 1.8 mmThin to medium: lacquers, synthetic enamels, primers, epoxies, urethanes565
67SS (45-6701).086″ / 2.2 mmHeavy, cream-like: house paint, latex, block sealers, gel coat567
68SS (45-6801).110″ / 2.8 mmHeavy to very heavy: block filler, mill white, vinyls, textured coatings568

Table 1 — 2100 fluid nozzles by orifice. All three are stainless steel.

The 66SS is the general-purpose choice and ships on both stocked 2100 outfits. Step up to 67SS above about 28 seconds on a #4 Ford cup, and to 68SS with the 68PB air nozzle for the heaviest coatings.

Do I really have to replace the fluid tip and needle together?

Yes. The needle seats inside the tip, and the two wear into each other. Put a new needle in a worn tip (or the reverse) and the seal is imperfect: the gun drips from the front, spits when triggered off, and the pattern never quite cleans up. Binks' instruction on every manual gun is to replace both at the same time, replace the needle packing while you are in there, lightly lubricate the tip threads and torque the tip to 20–25 ft-lb on JGA and MBC guns.

Matched pairs Clemtex stocks: AV-2115-D with MBC-496-DEX, AV-2115-E with MBC-444-E or JGA-402-E, and for the 2100 the 66SS with 565 needle.

Binks 66SD vs 66SK air nozzle: which one do I want on my 2100?

Both are siphon-feed (S) external-mix air nozzles that run with the 66SS fluid nozzle and 565 needle. The difference is air appetite and pattern size:

  • 66SD (46-6020): about 7.9 CFM at 30 PSI and 12.1 CFM at 50 PSI, 10.5″ pattern. The economical choice for smaller compressors. Comes on the 2101-4307-9 outfit.
  • 66SK (46-6082): about 11 CFM at 30 PSI, 15.2 at 50 and 19.5 at 70, 13″ pattern. More air means finer atomization or faster application. Comes on the 2101-4308-8 outfit.
Compressor check: figure 3–5 CFM per horsepower. If the compressor cannot keep up with the 66SK, the pattern will go starved and coarse; drop to the 66SD.
How do I read a Binks 2100 model number like 2101-4308-8?

The 2101- prefix is the 2100 gun. The middle digits encode the fluid nozzle and the last digit the air nozzle, so the number tells you exactly what is on the gun:

  • 2101-4308-8: 66SS fluid nozzle with the 66SK siphon air nozzle (bigger pattern, more CFM).
  • 2101-4307-9: 66SS fluid nozzle with the 66SD siphon air nozzle (less air, 10.5″ pattern).
  • 2101-4300-0: 66SS gun with no air nozzle; 2101-5111-5: 68SS with 68PB pressure cap; 2101-0000-0: bare gun, no set-up.

Use the number stamped on your gun to order the right replacement nozzle, needle and cap, or compare it to the complete-gun-assemblies table in the 2100 service manual. Not sure what you have? Contact Clemtex and we will identify it.
