Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CPF breathing-air filter remove carbon monoxide?

No. The CPF-20 and CPF-80 remove mists, water vapor and particulates down to 0.5 micron, but O.M. 04143 states they do not detect or remove CO or other toxic gases. An overheated or poorly maintained compressor can produce CO, so CO must be monitored separately, for example with a CMS-4 monitor. See Is a CO monitor required?

How do I bump test and calibrate a CMS-4 CO monitor?

Bump test every 30 days and calibrate every 90 days; for a new monitor, bump daily the first week and calibrate weekly the first month. Use 25 ppm gas (25573) and the 0.5 LPM connector and cup in kit 29767. Zero in fresh air first, then select BUMP or GAS CAL > A-CAL in User Mode, attach the cup and open the valve. Unscrew the connector from the cylinder afterward. The 29765 package includes the kit.

How long does the CMS-4 battery last?

The CMS-4 runs on a CR2450 3.0 V lithium coin cell. Clemco’s documents differ: O.M. 29872 says up to 4,000 hours; data sheet 30140 says about one year of normal use (up to 3000 hours). Turn it off at the end of each shift. Replace it when the battery icon flashes. On a dead-battery alarm the monitor does not detect CO, so do not use the respirator.
